A Scary Week

Last week, I woke up and my body was asleep. Usually it’s my arm or hand or a leg. I managed to get everything moving again. I had thought that Julia was with me when it happened, but she had no recollection of it. My memories of the rest of the week were fuzzy too. I was walking sideways, saying odd things, not even realizing it, and Julia demanded that I see my cardiologist. On the way down I took a quick sketch of the passengers on the downtown 1 train.

After a conversation with my cardiologist, and Julia on the phone with him, I was sent across the street to the emergency room at Mount Sinai West where the cardiologist had a team there to start taking tests. Here’s an attempt to sketch the ceiling of the curtained cubicle where I was admitted and bedded.

The cubicle next to mine became occupied and I made a sketch of the concerned father whose son had hit his head against a nail accidentally.

Eventually it was determined that I may have suffered a minor stroke, so I was hooked up to a heart monitor, and brought up to the 10th floor Cardiac Observation Unit. The next morning I made a sketch from the window, only coloring in the sky.

I sketched this the following afternoon in a new private room. The hills in the background are the hills of Hoboken, New Jersey, on the other side of the Hudson River.

That evening, the goings on outside on the sidewalk were of interest.

The following morning, I noticed a couple on the roof of their building.

Monday morning I was informed that I would be released later that day. I couldn’t wait to get out of there! I sketched the satellite discs, trying to pass the time.

Then I sketched some people on the sidewalk outside.

Finally, Monday evening I was discharged. Julia and I walked to pick up some new meds and we got salads and gleefully got home.

The next day, I grabbed some lunch at Paris Baguette and found a victim close by.

It sure was nice to be home!

All sketches were done with various fountain pens, all loaded with Platinum Carbon Black ink. Some sketches have watercolor also.

Thank you so much for visiting!

See you later!!

  2. Here with you Sean. Great sketches. You’re an inspiration for me. I’ve fallen off the horse a bit recently with drawing, and you’re one of the people who makes me feel like I should start again.

    1. Thank you so much, Joe! Don’t worry so much about falling off the horse. It can happen. I miss a day, here and there, and there have been times when it turned into several weeks or months. Lately, I try to have a small sketchbook and a pen within reach at all times. Before I enter the subway, I have my sketchbook with pen inserted in my hands. Sometimes, it doesn’t happen, but if I can, I will try.

  3. Sean, what a scary experience that must have been! But you could still draw! Amazing stuff, as usual, and I certainly hope that you are recovering well and that your cardio team got things figured out better. Best wishes to you.
